Web Development 5 Trends of Web Design in 2020

Web design exists in a constant state of evolution. Much as with any other form of media, digital or otherwise, there is an artistic element to the craft. Designers and creators are always searching for the next trend or revolutionary approach to building and updating websites. Internet users have a short attention span and high expectations. They will typically accept nothing less than the fastest, most efficient, and visually appealing website designs. Let’s dive into the top five trends in web design for 2020.

1. Dark Mode

These ultra-modern and stylish designs are not only soft on the eye, but they also make traditionally passive colours seem to pop off of the screen. Dark Mode is the perfect balance of form and function, and its roots can be traced back to pragmatic origins. Darker colour pallets are better for OLED screens. They extend a screen’s life expectancy and provide power-saving benefits. But the practicality does not hamper the overall attractiveness of the display. Darker backgrounds enhance accent colours in ways that lighter backgrounds cannot. This improves the total visibility of the display and the overall design of the website.

2. Intentional Imperfections

This technique takes a page right out of the “Abstract Art 101” handbook. It essentially refers to hand-drawn background design elements. These types of elements add emotion and create a sense of “humanity” to websites. This allows users to feel as though they are having a much more personal experience when visiting a particular website. Heart and genuine feeling are two of the things which internet users find very appealing when exploring websites and social media pages, and these intentionally imperfect hand-drawn design elements provide that in abundance.

3. 3-D Visual Elements

This is something that has been increasing in popularity for years, for many reasons. 3-D technology allows designers to create a far more immersive online experience than with only two dimensions. This makes “virtual tours” of apartments, hotel rooms and tourist attractions possible. It also allows for e-commerce sites, such as Amazon, to provide their customers with 360-degree views of the products offered on their sites.

4. Mixing Graphics and Pictures

This seems like another idea straight out of an art class. This is a great way to create memorable visuals because it allows for the combining (and overlapping) of pictures of real people and things with abstract graphics or shapes. It affords a brand the opportunity to be more customizable with their message, and targeted audience.

5. Frames of White Space

In some ways, this is almost the opposite of Dark Mode. Creating a solid frame of White Space allows for the “bleeding” of other colours, while still remaining contained within a specific theme. This also allows traditional “messy” design elements to maintain a neat appearance. A wide frame of White Space provides a solid design structure, and an excellent foundation for individual visual elements to stand out on a busy screen. It also helps to prioritize the different aspects of a particular web page.
